THE CREATOR
Weaver’s Story is an independent New Zealand-created fantasy universe developed by Eskymo Vercoe, built from a simple idea: a fictional world should be something you can explore, discover and become part of, rather than simply observe.
Weaver’s Story began with writing. The original Weaver’s Story novel was written by Eskymo Vercoe without the use of AI, establishing the story, characters and foundations of the world. From that beginning, the universe expanded into twelve distinct Kingdoms, each developed with its own people, environments, beliefs, cultures, histories, conflicts and way of seeing the world.
AI tools later became part of that creative and production process. They are used to help organise, develop and visually realise a world that already existed through writing and worldbuilding. AI is a tool used in the creation of Weaver’s Story, but it is not where Weaver’s Story began.
For independent creators, these new tools are opening possibilities that were previously beyond the reach of an individual or small team. An idea for a film no longer has to remain a screenplay, concept image or story simply because the creator cannot afford a large production crew, sets, costumes, visual effects and the enormous infrastructure traditionally required to put an imagined world on screen. AI filmmaking tools give independent storytellers another way to express their ideas, experiment with filmmaking and place their stories in front of an audience.
That does not remove the need for creativity. The technology still needs something worth creating. For Weaver’s Story, the films grow from an established universe of Kingdoms, characters, histories, environments, visual rules and stories. The process begins with the world and the story, then moves through writing, creative direction, visual development, filmmaking, generation and editing. The technology is the production tool. The story remains the reason for using it.
That opportunity has allowed Weaver’s Story to move beyond words and images and into film. WAKAHI became the first example of what a story from this universe could look and feel like on screen, with future films continuing to explore different characters, Kingdoms and periods within the same interconnected world.
Weaver’s Story continues to grow as new stories are written, new places are uncovered and the histories of the twelve Kingdoms are revealed. What began as a novel has become an interconnected universe, and new creative tools are allowing an independent creator to share more of that universe.
